In 1999, the Bartlesville Mid-High School won the state championship! Even more impressive, it was the 13th time in the last 14 years the Mid-High had brought home the state trophy in this same competition!
Quick, name the activity that local students have been so dominant in at the state level . . . give up? Science and Engineering! Students representing the Bartlesville District Science Fair had a great showing last March, with ten projects placing in the top four of their respective State Division and Categories! In addition, three local studentsí projects were selected to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Detroit, Michigan, last May.
Students receiving high honors from the March, 1999 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair (OSSEF) for Division I (grades 10-12) were : Hayley Li, Engineering - 1st; Sam Meek, Computer Science - 2nd; Beth Sundberg, Earth and Space Sciences - 3rd; Ankit Patel, Physical Sciences - 4th.
OSSEF Results for Division II (grades 7-9) were: Christina Adams, Biochemistry, Medicine & Health - 1st; Sanmati Rao, Physical Sciences - 1st; Marlana LeRoy, Behavioral and Social Sciences - 2nd; Sara Mohundro, Engineering - 2nd; Victoria Mitchell, Physical Sciences - 3rd; Hannah Winkler and Jessica Marsh, Team Projects - 4th. In addition at the OSSEF, the following special awards were won: Sarah Gordon, U.S. Navy/Marine Corps; Hayley Li, U.S. Army; Hayley Li, OK Department of Commerce; Ankit Patel, American Vacuum Society; Carlo Pinchay, OKC Geological Society; Sanmati Rao, American Vacuum Society; Beth Sundberg, American Institute of Professional Geologists.
At the 1999 International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May, Christina Adams of Bartlesville Mid-High School won a special award from the American Intellectual Property Law Association with her project "What Fabric Would Work Best as a Wheelchair Cover to Control Moisture Against a Patient?". Christina has also applied for a United States patent based on her research. Sarah Gordon of Bartlesville High School also won a special award at the ISEF, from the Women's Humane Society with her project "Evaluation of Two Environmental Enrichment Devices for Captive Pan Troglodytes; and a Comparative Study of Captive and Wild Chimp Behaviors". Hayley Li of Bartlesville Mid-High School also participated at the ISEF with her project "Trash Separator".
