2004 Bartlesville District Science Fair Winners Announced

The 51st annual Bartlesville District Science Fair was held March 5 and 6 at the ConocoPhillips Technology Center¹s Research Forum.  324 students participated in the Fair, representing the following schools:  Bartlesville High, Prue High, Oolagah-Talala High, Bartlesville Mid-High, Madison Middle, Central Middle, Owasso 6th, 7th, and 8th Grade Centers, American Christian, St. John¹s Catholic, Home School, Ranch Heights Elementary, Wayside Elementary, Wilson Elementary, Hoover Elementary, Dewey Lincoln Elementary, Osage Hills Elementary, Owasso Bailey Elementary and Prue Elementary.

The elementary competition on Friday, March 5, was for students in grades 1-6.  On Saturday, March 6, grades 7-9 competed in the Junior Division, and grades 10-12 in the Senior Division.  Category awards were presented for the top projects in various science disciplines and engineering, and a number of special awards recognized excellence in specific areas of research.

Two students were selected to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 9-14 in Portland, Oregon. Daniel Parrot, a 10th grader from Bartlesville Mid-High School who is sponsored by Colleen Bennett, was chosen for his project, ³Using Java to Communicate Across Multiple Platforms.² Katherine Vienot, a senior at Bartlesville High School and sponsored by Betty Henderson, will present her ³Improved Early Detection of Driver Drowsiness² invention at the International Fair.  Melissa Carvell, a seventh grader at Madison Middle School, was chosen to attend the International fair as a student observer.  In addition, 33 students were selected to represent the Bartlesville District Science Fair at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair to be held at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, April 1-3.  A listing of these students will be included in a future article with the results of the state competition.

Several teachers were honored due to their significant support of students at the Bartlesville District Science Fair.  Liz Swearingen of Owasso¹s Bailey Elementary School received an award sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers for sponsoring the most students in the Elementary Division.  Doug Boudreaux and Cheryl Fentress were also honored for significant sponsorship of students at this year¹s fair.  BDSF Director Lee Carvell presented Director¹s Awards to Colleen Bennett of Bartlesville Mid-High School and Betty Henderson of Bartlesville High School for their sustained and commendable support of students in the Bartlesville District Science Fair for many years.

The Bartlesville District Science Fair is a cooperative project of the NE Oklahoma Section of the American Chemical Society, the Bartlesville Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Bartlesville Chapter of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, and the Bartlesville-Tulsa Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Inc.  Major sponsorship is provided by ConocoPhillips and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., LP.

Bartlesville District Science Fair Director Lee Carvell called the 2004 Fair a very smoothly run event.  ³The significant efforts of the Board of Directors and the many volunteers provided an outstanding educational opportunity for our area students in this premier scientific and engineering competition.  I also want to commend the students on the quality of their projects, and the teachers and sponsors for the many hours of support helping these students pursue their experimental work.²
