Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair Award Winners

Bartlesville area students received many awards at the 2004 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair (OSSEF), held April 1-3 at East Central Oklahoma University in Ada.  32 area students participated, representing Bartlesville High School, Oolagah-Talala High School, Bartlesville Mid-High School, Owasso 7th Grade Center, Owasso 8th Grade Center, Madison Middle School, and Central Middle School.  The OSSEF is the premier pre-college science and engineering competition in the state of Oklahoma; competitors had to pre-qualify by being selected as the best student projects at their regional fairs.

Three students were acknowledged as state champions in their categories.  Daniel Parrott, a 10th grader at Bartlesville Mid-High School, won the senior division (grades 10-12) Computer Science Category with his project ³Using Java to Communicate Across Multiple Platforms.²  Shannon Charles, a 9th grader at Bartlesville Mid-High School, won the junior division (grades 7-9) Physical Sciences Category with her project ³Kick Up the Pressure.²  Melissa Carvell, a 7th grader at Madison Middle School, won the junior division Engineering Category with her project ³NASA Needs Zero.²

The students who competed at OSSEF were selected on March 6 at the Bartlesville District Science Fair due to the outstanding science and engineering projects they exhibited there.  Our state attendees were:  Shweta Bagga, Brylynn Bewley, Steven Bradley, Melissa Carvell, Shannon Charles, Hailey Deslauriers, Shelby Doyle, April Enslinger, Kayla Ewert, Kristen Green, David Grismore, Joshua Hall, Michael Harvey, Chandler Hicks, Ryan Jenkinson, Kyle Kempf, Lauren Leach, Travis Legg, Bethany McMartin, Alex McSpadden, Josh Myers, Daniel Parrott, Aaron Pruitt, Natalie Reese, Kevin Rolfs, Kristen Secora, Elizabeth Stouffer, Janaki Vasudevan, Katherine Vienot, Jeremy Waugh, Josh Weatherly, and Ryan Wooley.

The teachers who sponsored these students with their significant dedication of time, effort and guidance were:  Colleen Bennett, Betty Henderson, Cheryl Fentress, Jill Henrie, Rebecca Morales, Angela Neighbors, Susan Oliver, Mike Cole and John Hammack.

Bartlesville District Science Fair Director Lee Carvell commended the state science fair attendees:  ³Being selected to represent the district fair at the state level competition is a significant achievement in and of itself.  These students¹ scientific and engineering work was outstanding; their projects were the best at our district fair.  They should be commended for their hard work and dedication.  I also congratulate all of the award winners at the state fair, as the competition was very challenging due to the caliber of the students and projects exhibited.²
