Bartlesville area students received many awards at the 2005 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair (OSSEF), held March 31, April 1 & 2, 2005 at East Central Oklahoma University in Ada.
34 area students participated, representing Bartlesville High School, Bartlesville Mid-High School, Owasso 7th Grade Center, Madison Middle School, and Osage Hills School. The OSSEF is the premier pre-college science and engineering competition in the state of Oklahoma; competitors had to pre-qualify by being selected as the best student projects at their regional fairs.
Bartlesville High School’s competitors and teachers came home as the state champions, receiving the school trophy for Division I (grades 10-12) based on category place winners and overall school participation.
Three students were acknowledged as state champions in their categories.
Daniel Parrott, an 11th grader at Bartlesville High School, won the senior division Computer Science and Mathematics Category with his project “Screen Navigation for the Visually Impaired.” Daniel also won the “Best of Fair” award in Division I, which is given to the overall best project in all categories in grades 10-12.
Kaleb Potter, an 11th grader at Bartlesville High School, won the senior division Environmental Sciences Category with his project “Remediation of Oedogonium Algae Blooms by Natural Means.”
Melissa Carvell, an 8th grader at Madison Middle School, won the junior division (grades 7-9) Engineering Category with her project “NASA Needs Zero Phase 2: A Study to Achieve a Zero Coefficient of Linear Thermal Expansion.”
The students who competed at OSSEF were selected on March 6 at the Bartlesville District Science Fair due to the outstanding science and engineering projects they exhibited there. Our state attendees were: Alex Baillargeon, Brett Bone, Erin Rose Briggs, Melissa Carvell, Britney Caughell, Shelby Doyle, Eric Geibel, Muna Gharfeh, Kristin Green, David Grismore, Hance Henrie, Erin Hill, Reba Hill, Thomas Holland, Megan Isenberg, Isaac Jensen, SuJi Jeong, Jason King, Shane Linehan, Kendall McCall, Marcia McIntosh, Rebecca Morton, Josh Myers, Cody Papinchock, Daniel Parrott, Danielle Perlingiere, Kaleb Potter, Matthew Shinn, Jennifer Simmons, Kristi Smylie, Jessie Stirling, Stephen Tillinghast, Janaki Vasudevan, and Josh Weatherly.
The teachers who sponsored these students with their significant dedication of time, effort and guidance were: Betty Henderson, Colleen Bennett, Cheryl Fentress, Jill Henrie, Theresa Miller and Kimberly Takahashi.
Bartlesville District Science Fair Director Lee Carvell commended the state science fair attendees: “Being selected to represent the district fair at the state level competition is a significant achievement in and of itself. These students’ scientific and engineering work was outstanding; their projects were the best at our district fair. They should be commended for their hard work and dedication. I also congratulate all of the award winners at the state fair, as the competition was very challenging due to the caliber of the students and projects exhibited.”
