2006 BARTLESVILLE DISTRICT SCIENCE FAIR WINNERS

The 53rd annual Bartlesville District Science Fair was held March 3 and 4 at the ConocoPhillips Technology Center’s Research Forum.  304 students participated in the Fair, representing the following schools:  Bartlesville High, Bartlesville Mid-High, Madison Middle, Central Middle, Owasso 7th and 8th Grade Centers, St. John’s Catholic, Home School, Ranch Heights Elementary, Wayside Elementary, Hoover Elementary, Dewey Lincoln Elementary, Osage Hills Elementary, Owasso Bailey Elementary, Prue Elementary, Owasso Hodson Elementary, and Barnsdall Elementary.

The elementary competition on Friday, March 3, was for students in grades 1-6.  On Saturday, March 4, grades 7-9 competed in the Junior Division, and grades 10-12 in the Senior Division.  Category awards were presented for the top projects in various science and engineering disciplines, and a number of special awards recognized excellence in specific areas of research.

Two students were selected to compete at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 7-13 in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Daniel Parrott, a 12th grader from Bartlesville High School who was sponsored by Betty Henderson, was chosen for his project, “Creating an Online Study Session Network.”  Shelby Doyle, an 11th grader from Bartlesville High School who was also sponsored by Betty Henderson, was chosen for her project “Subluxation Splint:  A New Hip Brace for Infants with Dysplasia of the Hip.”  Kenneth Sandoval, a 7th grader at St. John’s Catholic School who was sponsored by Rudy Sandoval, was chosen to attend the International fair as a student observer.  In addition, 31 students were selected to represent the Bartlesville District Science Fair at the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair to be held at East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, on March 30, 31, and April 1.  A listing of these students will be included in a future article with the results of the state competition.

Several people were honored due to their significant support of students at the Bartlesville District Science Fair.  Doug Boudreaux of Bartlesville’s Ranch Heights Elementary School received an award sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers for significant efforts sponsoring students in the Elementary Division.  Colleen Bennett received an award sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers for sponsoring the most category award winning projects in the Junior/Senior Division.  Betty Henderson received a special recognition teacher award from the Washington-Nowata County Medical Society.  BDSF Director Lee Carvell presented a Special Recognition Teacher’s Award to Elizabeth Swearingen of Owasso’s Bailey Elementary School for her sustained and commendable support of students in the Bartlesville District Science Fair for many years.  Special Recognition awards were also presented to Sherry Woods and Greg Fisher, for their many years of support to the BDSF’s area students through up-front planning and arrangements each year at the ConocoPhillips Technology Center.  Lee Carvell presented Ranch Heights Elementary School with the Directors Award for significant participation in the BDSF; Doug Boudreaux and Darcy Swanson accepted the award on behalf of the school.

The Bartlesville District Science Fair is a cooperative project of the NE Oklahoma Section of the American Chemical Society, the Bartlesville Chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Bartlesville Chapter of the Oklahoma Society of Professional Engineers, and the Bartlesville-Tulsa Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers, Inc.  Major sponsorship is provided by ConocoPhillips and Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., LP.
