Area Students Excel at the

Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair

Bartlesville area students received many awards at the 2007 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair (OSSEF), held March 29-31 at East Central Oklahoma University in Ada.  33 area students participated, representing Bartlesville High School, Bartlesville Mid-High School, Owasso 8th Grade Center, Owasso 7th Grade Center and Madison Middle School.  The OSSEF is the premier pre-college science and engineering competition in the state of Oklahoma; competitors had to pre-qualify by being selected as the best student projects at the regional competition in early March.

Five students were acknowledged as state champions in their categories.  Lindsey Maltby, a 12th grader at Bartlesville High School, won the senior division (grades 10-12) Physical Sciences Category with her project “The Search for the Golden Glove.”  Melissa Carvell, a 10th grader at Bartlesville Mid-High School, won the senior division Engineering Category with her project “Science Thwarts Insurgents:  Improvements in Ceramic Armor Systems Design Using Composites for Tensile Reinforcement in Ceramic Plates.”  Mackenzie McDaniel, a 10th grader at Bartlesville Mid-High School, won the senior division Earth & Space Sciences Category with her project “What Foundation Type Best Withstands the Forces of an Earthquake?”  Tyler Carvell, a 7th grader at Madison Middle School, won the junior division (grades 7-9) Engineering Category with his project “Shooting With Magnets:  A Study to Optimize a Coilgun and its Coils.”  And Craig Fentress, a 9th grader at Bartlesville Mid-High School, won the junior division Physical Sciences Category with his project “To Choke, Or Not To Choke.”  Melissa Carvell was also acknowledged as the “Best of Fair” in the senior division, being selected as having exhibited the best project among the ten state category champions.

Three well-deserving people associated with the Bartlesville District Science Fair (BDSF) were inducted into the Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair Hall of Fame:   Daisy Rogers, a 7th grade science teacher at Madison Middle School, Jill Henrie, a 7th grade science teacher at Owasso 7th Grade Center, and Jennifer Galvin, the Scientific Review Committee Chair on the BDSF Board of Directors.  Daisy and Jill were inducted for their many years of tireless support for their students, teaching how to conduct scientific research through the scientific method, and for their support of their students at the BDSF and OSSEF.  Jennifer has served on the BDSF Board for more than 11 years, providing guidance on the complicated rules required for students conducting research under the requirements of the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The students who competed at OSSEF were selected on March 3 at the Bartlesville District Science Fair due to the outstanding science and engineering projects they exhibited.  Our state attendees were:  Kacee Allison, Caitlin Beasley, Kimberly Branham, Cylas Brooks, Melissa Carvell, Tyler Carvell, Adam Collins, Craig Fentress, Laura Figueroa, Trevor Graham, Lauren Heald, Summer Hill, Melissa Hoelting, Alyssa Kile, Rajneesh Magesh, Lindsey Maltby, Josh McAlister, Katie McCarley, Mackenzie McDaniel, Marcia McIntosh, Rebecca Morton, Jamie Myers, Whitney Potter, Rachel Rickards, Marisa Samson, Susan Sattich, Jacqueline Schrader, Caryn Senn, Alden Sparks, Carrie Tillett, Jenna Volmer, Andrew Williams and Andrew Willis.

The teachers who sponsored these students with their significant dedication of time, effort and guidance were:  Colleen Bennett, Susan Farrow, Cheryl Fentress, Betty Henderson, Jill Henrie, Daisy Rogers and Susan Oliver.

Bartlesville District Science Fair Director Lee Carvell commended the state science fair attendees:  “Being selected to represent the district fair at the state level competition is a significant achievement in and of itself.  These students’ scientific and engineering work was outstanding; their projects were the best at our district fair.  They should be commended for their hard work and dedication.  I also congratulate all of the award winners at the state fair, as the competition was very challenging due to the caliber of the students and projects in attendance.”

Full results for the 2007 Oklahoma State Science and Engineering Fair will be posted in the near future at their website http://cs4.ecok.edu/ossef/ under the “Previous Fair Results” link.  Our area student category award winners are listed below.  Special award winners will be detailed in a subsequent article.
